Watch What You Watchin' - Viacom v. YouTube Redux

In the wake of Viacom's $1 BILLION copyright infringement lawsuit settlement, YouTube has been ordered to turn over 12 TERABYTES of database information of every video ever watched on the site, complete with user IDs and IP addresses.   In the wake of massive protest and fear, Google/YouTube reached an agreement to "mask" the user data, hoping to alleviate some concerns over this Big Brother type of intrusion into users private search and viewing history.

"Viacom and the other litigants have backed off their demand for
YouTube user viewing histories," Google said in a statement. "We have
reached agreement to anonymize the data."

However, Slashdot reports that there is no such thing as an "anonymized dataset," meaning that there is no real way to "mask" or protect an individuals privacy rights once a database of this nature is turned over.  While it may protect some users, it's still likely to reveal some users and what they surfed.  Given all of this, it's still quite unclear why Viacom needs this data in the first place.  The legal question is whether Google infringed on copyright.  Why should Google's log files be necessary to determine that? 

Watch what your watchin' people, its a brave new world out there.......

ATHENS (Reuters) - Nine British women were facing prostitution charges after being arrested at the weekend for taking part in an oral sex competition in the Greek holiday island of Zakynthos, police said on Monday.

Six British and six Greek men, including two bar owners, were also charged in the incident, which took place at Laganas beach in the south of the Ionian island, which lies off the west coast of mainland Greece, police said.

The women, who came to the popular resort on holiday, had been paid to take part in the competition, which was video recorded and was to be posted on the Internet, police said.

The men were charged with encouraging obscene behavior.

In recent years, Laganas has established itself as one of Greece's most popular destinations for twenty-something holidaymakers and is known for its wild party scene.

Around 15 million people -- a fifth of them British -- visit the eastern Mediterranean country each year, drawn by its soaring summer temperatures, azure waters and sandy beaches.

Kotaku is reporting that Sony has partnerships with Warner, Fox, Lion's Gate, Disney, MGM and "others," which means the offerings should be substantial. Sony spokepeople also said TV and movie categories would be separate, with price points to vary based on purchase, HD and regular rental. You will also be able to transfer movies to your PSP via USB cable.

The family, who are poor and largely illiterate, do not believe modern science can help their child and are already building a small temple to the girl in the village.

The study, which appears in this issue of NueroReport, showed that when young men were shown erotic pictures, they were more likely to make a larger financial gamble than if they were shown a picture of something scary, such as a snake, or something neutral, such as a stapler.

With over 1 billion people unable to access safe drinking water across the globe, a person has to wonder, what's next? Well, new product Lifestraw has an answer. Invented by Mikkel Vestergaard Fradsen, Lifestraw is a portable water purification tool that can be worn around the neck. It can filter up to 700 liters of water, effectively removing most of the micro organisms responsible for causing waterborne diseases. At $2 a pop (individually), this could be the biggest idea of 2008. Maybe ever....nice work Lifestraw.

Didn't see this one coming a mile away......add to the laundry list of indictable charges this admin keeps racking up (which is genius in some perverse way), President Bush strongly urged the House (by furling his forehead and banging his fist on a podium) to pass a bill that would RETROACTIVELY protect and telecom firms complicit in aiding government eavesdropping.

Sounds like more new fun coming from the administration that keeps the hits coming.....if only we could retroactive protection for all the drunk dialing we do, huh?
